It’s heaps weird when we rock up at Maths. Abigail’s sittin’ next to the wall, leanin’ on it, holding her belly. She’s next to Nelly, who’s already working.

Erik grabs my arm and pulls me back to the door. ‘I’m going to sit up the front,’ he says. He nods his head at Spooks, who’s by herself, as bloody usual. Then he says, ‘You can sit where you like.’

I go to say something back, but he’s already walking.

He’s being a bit of a dickhead, but Abs doesn’t look like she wants a bar of anybody, and Nelly’s always pissed off when you wreck her focus. So I follow him and sit down too close to the front. I can see the hairs on Munro’s knuckles from here.

Erik leans back all casual, staring at the board, but the only thing written on it’s yesterday’s date. ‘How’s it going?’ he asks Rain after havin’ a nice long look at those eight numbers.

‘Good…’ she says. She nudges his book with her elbow. ‘Sorry!’

He says ‘Sorry,’ too.

They still haven’t even looked at each other. And it’s a double period. Am I sposed to sit through just about two hours of this shit? Gimme a fucken break.

Erik’s rocking back on his chair and I wanna kick one of the legs out so bloody much. It’d be the funniest thing I’ve ever seen.

But he lets it drop and starts workin’.

I reckon I made the wrong call sitting here. I try getting Abigail’s attention, but she’s so bloody pissed off I think she might never give it to me again. She’s got her eyes locked on the back of Rain ’n’ Erik’s heads.

Bet I could cheer her up, but. Bet she’d be laughing if I was sitting next to her.

I’ll message her, I reckon. Erik won’t care. They’re not even together. And he’s got this new fucken girlfriend and everything. And he said yesterday – it’s all good if we’re mates. Mates message each other. Mates hang out at parties.
